How to Install Cabinet Pulls in 5 Easy Steps
Installing cabinet pulls is one of the fastest ways to refresh kitchen or bathroom cabinetry. With the right CTC measurement and a few basic tools, most homeowners can complete the job in an afternoon.
1. Confirm Your CTC Measurement
Center-to-center (CTC) is the distance between screw hole centers. Measure your existing holes before ordering replacements so you can reuse the same drill pattern.
If you are drilling new holes, mark the center points with a pencil and use a cabinet hardware template or measuring tape for consistent placement.
2. Gather Tools and Hardware
You will typically need a drill, appropriate drill bit size for your screws, a screwdriver or driver bit, painter's tape, and a level for longer pulls.
Use the screws included with your hardware unless your door thickness requires longer fasteners. Breakaway screws are common for variable panel depths.
3. Drill or Align Mounting Holes
For replacement projects, align the new pull over existing holes and test fit before tightening.
For new holes, drill carefully through the door or drawer front. Tape over the exit side to reduce splintering on wood or painted surfaces.
4. Attach the Pull and Tighten Evenly
Insert screws from the back of the door or drawer and tighten gradually, alternating sides so the pull seats evenly.
Avoid over-tightening zinc alloy or plated hardware, which can strip threads or deform thinner door panels.
5. Check Alignment Across the Run
Step back and compare handle height across adjacent doors and drawers. Adjust before all screws are fully torqued.
For mixed pull and knob layouts, keep vertical placement consistent on door stiles for a professional finished look.
